Exclusive Excerpt from The Sheriff of Shelter Valley
By Tara Taylor Quinn

“MAMA! MAAMAA!” Ryan’s scream tore through her fog of sleep.

Beth Allen was out of bed and across the room before she’d even fully opened her eyes. Heart pounding, she lifted her two-year-old son out of the secondhand crib, pressing his face into her neck as she held him.

“It’s okay, Ry,” she said softly, pushing the sweaty auburn curls away from his forehead. Curls she dyed regularly, along with her own. “Shh, Mama’s right here. It was just a bad dream.”

“Mama,” the toddler said again, his little body shuddering. His tiny fists were clamped tightly against her—her nightshirt and strands of her straight auburn hair held securely within them.

“Mama” was what he’d said when she’d woken up alone with him in that motel room in Snowflake, Arizona, with a nasty bruise on her forehead, another one at the base of her skull. And no memory whatsoever.

She didn’t know how old she was. How old her son was. She could only guess Ry’s age by comparing him to other kids.

She didn’t even know her own name. She’d apparently checked in under the name Beth Allen and, trusting herself to have done so for a reason, had continued using it. It could be who she really was, but she doubted it. She’d obviously been on the run, and it didn’t seem smart to have made herself easy to find.

Suspicious

Cold-blooded predators lurk in the Everglades—and not all of them are gators

When Jesse Crane returned to his roots to serve on the Miccosukee police force, he’d hoped to leave behind the violence of the city and the memories of his murdered wife. But bodies start to pile up in Jesse’s corner of the sultry Florida swampland…

As he probes these crimes, Jesse is drawn to the beautiful Lorena Fortier, a new hire at the local gator farm and research facility. Lorena is a little too interested in Jesse’s investigation, but before he can uncover her true motives, they’re both pulled into a dangerous web of greed, ambition and animal cunning. To survive, they’ll have to decide whether they can trust each other…before the hunters become the hunted.

The Sheriff of Shelter Valley

Six months ago, Beth woke up with no memory of her past, a bruised face and a little boy who called her “Mama.” Until her memory returns, the most dangerous thing she can do is to fall for the sheriff—the one man who can uncover the truth and destroy the person she’s become.

Get Out on Top (Tara Taylor Quinn)

Summer with TTQ Banner smallerI’ve been thinking a lot about right and wrong.  What’s right for one might not be right for another.  We have tough choices to make sometimes.  Choices that are right in one perspective and wrong in another.  Choices where someone is going to get hurt no matter what we do.  These kinds of challenges can be road blocks beyond which we never get past.  We become frozen, unable to move for fear of going the wrong way.  And sometimes not moving is the worst choice of all.  Because then everyone gets hurt.

I believe we have all been given a tool, an internal GPS, to guide us around the road blocks.  To help us choose the road that is the one we are meant to travel.  Or a road that will allow us to fulfill our purpose.  Or a purpose.  It’s not the mind, at this point, that can help us.  The mind is the thing stopping us.  At this critical point, it is only our hearts that can guide us.  Not to be confused with emotions.  Our emotions, depending on which one is reigning supreme, create many of life’s greatest troubles.  But our hearts, that sense of internal peace, is the ultimate guide.  Get to a place where you can quiet your mind.  Where no one’s voice is influencing you.  Including your own internal critic.  Just find a peaceful moment.  And in that peace, ask your question.  You will get a sense of knowing.

Every time in my life, when I’ve acted on that peaceful sense of knowing, I have been able to live with myself in the consequences.  When I act on emotion, or thinking, alone, I almost always have regrets.

The knowing isn’t always there.  It doesn’t always answer when I want it to.  Sometimes I have to sit for weeks, or longer, revisiting the peaceful place, until I ‘know’.  Sometimes we are meant to wait.

I have always told my daughter, from the time she was very young, to listen to her heart.  That is my prayer for everyone.  It is the only answer.

And for those of you who aren’t at a road block and just want to enjoy the day…Here’s a little fun chance to win a VISA gift card, a t-shirt and free books:

When The Road Turns (Tara Taylor Quinn)

When the road turns, I turn with it.  Not because I’m that flexible, or that willing to be led on curvy or unknown paths, but because I know that if I want to live life, really live it, I have to move with the earth.

I have plans.  I work toward them.  And sometimes the road turns.  I can stay steadfast and still turn with the road.  I just have to find the way to get where I was going via the detour.  Or to assess my plan and determine if it was the best one.  The most authentic one.

My thought for the week…if you don’t turn with the road, and the road ends, you remain in place forever.  You don’t progress or experience.  You don’t even find out what life has to offer you or your plan because you refuse to go find out.

The road sometimes leads you on a painful or dangerous path for a while.  Don’t stop!!  Just keep moving forward, eyes ahead on that plan, and keep going.  Sometimes the road leads you past flower beds.  That’s where to take a breather from your journey.  Smell the flowers.  Let their sweet nectar heal you.  And when you’re ready, get back on the road.

I’m on a new and somewhat exhilarating road lately and invite everyone along with me.  For any of you who’ve missed the journey so far, here’s a recap:

We’re blitzing the Grand Finale for
The Good Father
By Tara Taylor Quinn

If you missed any part of this tour, including any of the excellent guest posts (some of the best we’ve had the chance to promote) go back and check them out now, along with some excellent reviews…

Launch – Intro to The Good Father

This is the story I sat down to write. What happened on the page was, as usual, a total surprise to me.

Colorimetry – Excerpt

His father had failed first.

And then, according to his mother, she’d failed, too.

Brett didn’t agree with her assessment, knowing that when she’d lashed out at him the afternoon of Livia’s funeral, beating him on the chest with blows that didn’t even leave bruises, she’d been railing at life, distraught with grief, and clinging to him as much as pounding her fists against the wall he presented between her and her need to die…

“The characters are so realistic and lovable, I mean how can you not love them with everything that they have been through.”

underneath the covers – The Dark Night of the Soul

In every good story there has to be ‘that’ moment. The one in which the reader can’t see how the characters are going to get past their hurdles. The one that keeps the reader turning the page to find out…

Mel’s Shelves – Promo

Pieces of Whimsy – Excerpt

Still in the navy blue suit he’d worn to attend the morning board meeting, he’d loosened the knot of the red tie a bit. His one concession to relaxation. His wing tips were shined. His smart watch in place.

Brett’s life was a mission—and all pieces were accounted for.

Bookworm Lisa – Promo

Brooke Blogs – I Am A Survivor

When my story went public, my editor gave me another purpose. She wanted me to write a series of books revolving around a domestic violence shelter. I’d never felt more in commune with a project in my life. And so The Lemonade Stand was born. The Lemonade Stand, Where Secrets Are Safe. It’s a very unique women’s shelter. One that I wish so badly had been there for me to run to all those years ago. One that I wish existed today.

Copywrite1985 – Review

“Tara Taylor Quinn weaves a story here that grabs you and doesn’t let go until well after you turn the last page. The characters are compelling and realistic, their motives clear, and the conflict is high stakes and seems insurmountable. Ms. Quinn doesn’t shortchange the reader by giving us a pat ending that doesn’t take into account all that has gone on before, but gives the reader both a satisfying and realistic ending that makes the ride worth it–just like she promised.”

Paranormal Books – Excerpt

He’d been celebrating. Ten years since he’d sold the dot-com he’d started his junior year in college. A decade of his life had passed, and here he was. Standing alone in the walk-in shower in his elegant, historical, two-story walk-up across a quiet street from a flowered lot that led to the ocean beyond.

Beck Valley Books – The First Five Books

The books revolving around The Lemonade Stand are not all interrelated. Many of them don’t even feature characters who lived and breathed in previous books. The books are connected by a place. The Lemonade Stand. The series started out with ideas for three books. I am currently working on an eighth one and number nine is on its way, too. So for anyone who is new to the series, and for those of you who want a reminder, I’ll give you a one liner look at the first five books.

“I really loved this story, I loved that it shows there are help for women out there and there is also love out there, even when it is hard to realize.”

My Devotional Thoughts – The Food of it All

It was right then that Brett told me about his favorite meal. He told me, not to fill in background noise, but because it showed me the conflicted man he was. His favorite meal was a peanut butter and bacon sandwich. He loved them. And as he scarfed one down, he was angry with himself, too. Because his father had introduced him to the delicacy when Brett was a young boy. And Brett, the adult, hates his father with every dark crevice in his being.

Wishful Endings – Flowers

I sat down to write the first book in the Where Secrets Are Safe series, Wife By Design, and the hero shows up at The Lemonade Stand – the unique women’s shelter around which the series is revolving – as a landscaper. Kind of threw me for a loop. I know very little about landscaping. I tried to convince him he was something else. He kept coming back as a landscaper. So I did some research.

Release Week (Tara Taylor Quinn)

TheGoodFatherThe Good Father is out!  It hit the stands two days ago.  And on it’s first night of life, it also hit #1 on two Bestseller’s lists on Amazon.

Book six in the Where Secrets Are Safe series, The Good Father brings a heartfelt detail to The Lemonade Stand, Where Secrets Are Safe.  Brett, the reluctant hero, is the Stand’s mysterious founder.  The reader finds this out right up front.  Pretty much as soon as Brett steps naked out of the shower in the first scene.

But no one at the Stand knows who he is.  And he has no intention of them knowing.  Ever.  No one at the Stand has ever met him.  He intends to keep it that way.  Brett isn’t a perfect man.  He’s a wounded one.  At times he’s infuriating.  He knows it, too.  And tries to spare people.  But his ex-wife, Ella, just won’t leave him alone with his solitude.  And she knows how to hit him where it counts.

Please join Brett and I on tour.  (Click the banner for dates and links.)  We’ll be giving away a $10 personalized VISA gift card.  A Spend the Summer with ttq women’s t-shirt.  and copies of The Good Father.  On tour you can also play the Spend the Summer with ttq Lovin’ Summer social game, with a basket full of summer and free books attached, and enter to win the Spend the Summer with ttq Grand Prize.

Grand Finale First Leg of Summer Tour (Tara Taylor Quinn)

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

We’re blitzing the Grand Finale for
Suspicious & The Sheriff of Shelter Valley
By Heather Graham & Tara Taylor Quinn

This Harlequin Bestseller Author Collection is the re-release of Suspicious by Heather Graham and The Sheriff of Shelter Valley by Tara Taylor Quinn, two best-selling romantic suspense books.

Here are some snippets from each stop. . .

Beck Valley Books - The Sheriff of Shelter Valley

Several years ago my editor suggested that I might want to write a series of books set in the same town. I could pick any town, big or small, real or fictional. I pondered for a day or two. Took the question with me as I went about my life. And the one thing that kept coming back to me, not from a sales standpoint, or even a larger than life one, was that I had to set my town in Arizona. Because if this series was a success, I was going to be spending a lot of mental and emotional time in this town. I was going to have to want to be there. I was going to have to love it. So that my readers would want to be there – and love it – too.

Diana’s Book Reviews - Audiobook of Suspicious

Hot off the press from Harlequin Books: Toronto, New York (May 21, 2015)—Harlequin and HarperCollins Publishers today announced the launch of Harlequin Audio, a new imprint that will produce audio versions of Harlequin titles. The imprint will release its first titles on June 30, 2015. . .

In its first year, Harlequin Audio plans to release 200 titles. . . . All titles will be available in the retail and library space.

AND…ttq is among them!!! SOOOO excited! Along with Heather Graham’s Suspicious, The Sheriff of Shelter Valley, read by the great Cris Dukehart, is out July 7th!!!!! Yep, right up there in the first wave of releases!! Whew, there, I finally got to spill my beans. I’ve been sitting on this news for over a month!

Brooke Blogs - Suspicious

I’m delighted that Suspicious, a popular early (or earlier!) book of mine is being reissued, together with Tara’s The Sheriff of Shelter Valley. Written ten years ago, Suspicious is set in South Florida. . .

In Suspicious, we’re looking mostly at a tract of land that stretches across the lower end of the state. There are really two roads that cross it–Alligator Alley, recently incorporated into I-75. You can pop out of the Weston area of Broward County and visit Big Cypress and a wonderful Seminole museum.

Or you can take the Tamiami Trail.

Go back and read the rest. . .

Smelling the Roses (Tara Taylor Quinn)

Roses AboundI am stopping to smell the roses.  I am on a horrendous schedule over the first nine months of 2015.  Horrendous and blessed at the same time.  I’m in the midst of writing five contracted books.  Three are done.  I’m currently on number four.  And I want number five to be as good, as deep and enriching and entertaining as number one was.

So I’ve made a conscious effort to fill my well.  Every single day.  And I had to be able to fill it fast so I could get to the pages that were waiting.  I wasn’t going to be able to go out and find the roses.  So I brought them home.  Two bushes to go with the one floundering one I already had.    Asked nicely for my honey to give them the underground irrigation they’d need.  I took ownership of a pair of pruners.  And every single morning I visit all three plants.  I talk to them.  Thank them for sharing life with me.  One bush in particular has the most incredibly fragrant aroma.  Another has soul filling colors.  The third is angelic white roses.  So far I’ve only had one flower there.  The picture above was just taken.  I have more than twenty buds in various stages of blossoming into flowers on one plant alone.  The previously floundering one.  I’ve had the sickly bush for more than year.  It produced, at most two roses at a time.  And today I have more than twenty.  Funny what happens when you put your mind to something.  And I do.  Every day.

Funny what else happens.  You focus and suddenly you have four books coming out almost at once.  We’re planning a great summer for anyone who wants to join in with us.  I’ve had help on this one from the ladies at Prism Book Tours.  Lots of games and prizes, excerpts and free books coming up over the next eight weeks.  Starting next week.  You can follow the fun starting on 5/27 at Spend The Summer with ttq.  We’ll be visiting lots of places.  Giving away gift cards and books and a surprise or two along the way.  And ending with a huge Facebook Party and grand prizes in July.

The first book up for celebration is out in just six days.  It’s a re-issue of my The Sheriff of Shelter Valley in conjunction with a Heather Graham reissue, Suspicious.  You get both bestselling novels for one great price so if you missed them, you’ll want to grab the chance now!  You can click on the book to pre-order either print or eBook today at 35% off the price with coupon code HAPPYMAY!  Until next week, I hope you all smell some roses!
